SAN FRANCISCO, 15 NOV – YouTube is now introducing a new feature that allows content creators to monetize during vertical live broadcasts, the company said in a statement yesterday.
Through the new feature, viewers can buy jewelsYouTube’s digital currency, to send gifts or an animated gift that will appear on the screen during the vertical live broadcast. Every gift sent will give Rubies to content creators, where they receive one cent (US$0.01) for each ruby which is accepted.
However, prizes can only be accepted if the content creator broadcasts a vertical live broadcast either directly through YouTube or using third-party streaming software. Viewers can only send gifts through the mobile app, according to YouTube.
The company notes that the gift feature provides a new experience for viewers to visually support their favorite creators.
These functions are also compared to features live gifting TikTok, which allows viewers to buy coins to send cash prizes to content creators during live broadcasts. According to a TechCrunch report, content creators on TikTok managed to make thousands of dollars through giveaways during their live broadcasts, including some streamers Non-Player Character (NPC) who earn thousands of dollars in a day.
The move marks a development in YouTube’s efforts to improve the live broadcast experience as well as give content creators the opportunity to diversify their sources of income. – Xinhua
