Policy: On Saturday, Russia claimed to have taken control of yet another village in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces stated that the main focus is now on “preventing the Russian occupiers from advancing further”.

Zelenskyy claims that his forces are making progress in the fight to repel the Russian offensive. In his daily video speech, he says that Russia is paying a high price.

– The attackers lose infantry and equipment. It is a significant loss, he says.

Ukraine has evacuated almost 10,000 people from the northeastern border area in the Kharkiv region after Russia launched the new offensive on Friday last week.

Ukrainian officials this week accused Russian soldiers in the city of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region of capturing dozens of civilians and using them as human shields to defend Russian command centers. It is a claim that the news agency AFP has not been able to verify.

Two civilians, a 70-year-old and an 83-year-old, were killed as they tried to leave the city of Vovchansk in a car, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office in Kharkiv.

– The fighting in the Vovchansk area is ongoing, says a statement from Ukraine’s armed forces.

In his speech, Zelenskyj also says that Ukrainian forces have repulsed an attack further south, around Chasiv Yar, a town in the Donetsk region.
