10 million Californians participate in an earthquake simulation

LOS ANGELES, OCT 18 – More than 10 million Californians yesterday participated in the world’s largest annual earthquake preparedness simulation, reports Xinhua.

At 10:17 a.m. local time yesterday, Californians stopped going about their daily activities and carried out ‘lay down, shelter and hold’ drills and other self-protection measures in the event of a major earthquake.

Over 10.5 million participants registered for the named training Great California ShakeOutaccording to the organizer’s website.

The exercise was held to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, one of the worst disasters in the state’s history.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is asking residents to prepare for possible future strong earthquakes by participating in the drill.
