2,500 gather in Beachwood to remember those killed, taken hostage Oct. 7, 2023 during Hamas attack on Israel

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — More than 2,500 people came together Monday (Oct. 7) on the grounds of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, 25701 Science Park Drive, to remember those who lost their lives or were taken captive during the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel.

On that date a year ago, more than 1,200 people were murdered and greater than 250 were kidnapped.

Those who attended the outdoor remembrance gathered to demand the release of the hostages, and to pray for the day when “neighbors can live side by side in peace.”

Clergy, elected officials, students and community leaders led the audience in song and prayer, and provided messages of support.

Scheduled City Council meetings Monday in University Heights and Beachwood began a half-hour later than usual so that Mayors Michael Dylan Brennan and Beachwood’s Justin Berns could attend the remembrance.

During his report later that night at the Beachwood City Council meeting, Berns said, “Fortunately, this was a peaceful event where the strength of Beachwood and surrounding communities was evident by nearly 2,500 residents, neighbors and guests in attendance.”

Berns expressed his thanks to the Beachwood Police and Fire Departments, who worked alongside several other agencies, for their work securing the “solemn” event.

“In times like these, strong public safety measures are essential to protect our community,” Berns said.

Councilman Eric Synenberg also praised the safety workers, and thanked Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne who spoke at the Federation ceremony.

“They were both adamant and firm in their commitment to the Jewish community and the state of Israel since last Oct. 7,” Synenberg said.

The crowd also heard remarks from Rotem Sadeh, a mother of two young children from Sderot, Israel, whose family narrowly survived last year’s attacks.
