Last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in no time. The Russian defeated Portuguese outsider Nuno Borges 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 in just 1:51 hours. The 2021 champion is now the only remaining former title winner in the men’s competition at the Grand Slam tournament in New York after the elimination of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

“I love playing here. It’s my favorite tournament,” said Medvedev, who could now face Jannik Sinner from Italy. The 28-year-old is in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in the past six years.

The 27-year-old Borges was completely overwhelmed, especially at the beginning of the first US Open round of 16 of his career at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He only scored eleven points in the first set and lost the set after 23 minutes.

Pegula fuels title dreams of US fans

In the women’s event, Jessica Pegula became the second American after Emma Navarro to make it into the top eight. The sixth-ranked player in the world beat Russian Diana Schnaider 6:4, 6:2. US fans are hoping for an American to win the second title in a row – last year Coco Gauff won the US Open, but was defeated by teammate Navarro.
