World number one tennis player Iga Swiatek is still aiming for her sixth Grand Slam tournament victory at the US Open. The 23-year-old Pole beat Russian Lyudmila Samsonova 6:4, 6:1 in the round of 16 and is still undefeated in the tournament. Swiatek will now face sixth-seeded American Jessica Pegula in the round of the best eight in New York.
“At the beginning of the tournament, it was not easy to find my rhythm. But it feels like I am getting better day by day,” said the 2022 title winner after the victory.
Swiatek was flawless on her own serve and did not allow her opponent a break point. At 5:4 in the first set, she took Samsonowa’s serve for the first time and managed to break again at the beginning of the second set. After 1:30 hours, she converted the match point.
