Flooded streets and fallen trees – a short but severe summer storm left parts of the Italian capital under water on Tuesday. In less than an hour, 60 liters of rain per square meter fell in the center of the Eternal City, as much as would normally fall in an entire autumn month, reported the Italian news agency Ansa, citing the municipal authorities in Rome.

The rainfall of this intensity was completely unexpected and had not been predicted by any weather forecast, said the city’s environmental officer Sabrina Alfonsi, according to Ansa. Shortly before, the civil protection team had been out and about to put out some fires. The rain came with strong winds. Some underpasses were also flooded. More thunderstorms are forecast for Rome in the coming days, with maximum daytime temperatures of 32 degrees.
