Maurice Schmidt has won the fourth gold medal for Germany in wheelchair fencing at the Paralympics. In the Grand Palais in Paris, the 25-year-old won with the sabre against the top-seeded defending champion Piers Gilliver from Great Britain with 15:8.

“We won’t really understand it until a few days from now, right now it’s just euphoria,” said coach Alexander Bondar. “Maurice implemented everything and fenced intelligently – we can see that in today’s result.”

It is the greatest success for Schmidt, who was born with dysmelia, and the first Paralympic gold medal for the German wheelchair fencers since 1996 in Atlanta. In his first participation three years ago, the SV Böblingen fencer finished in ninth place. His greatest success to date was silver at the European Championships two years ago.
