After two nights behind bars on charges of sexual aggression, Spanish footballer Rafa Mir from Primera División club FC Valencia is free again. The centre-forward was released on conditions after the judge’s hearing, said the 27-year-old professional’s lawyer. A friend of the footballer who was arrested with Mir on Monday is also free.

The complaint was filed by a 21-year-old woman. She claims that she was raped by Mir in the footballer’s apartment on Sunday evening, as the newspaper “El País” and other media reported, citing investigators. The woman stated that she had to be treated in hospital after the attack. An acquaintance of the alleged victim claims that she was beaten by the footballer’s friend.

The lawyer asserts the footballer’s innocence

Meanwhile, the lawyer assured journalists that the sexual acts were consensual. There was “no doubt about that.” The player was now more relaxed. “The first chapter is over (…) But the game is only just beginning,” he stressed.

Shortly after the arrests were announced, the club said: “As for the press reports on the arrest of Valencia CF player Rafa Mir, the club is aware of the arrest and, in the absence of details, can only state that it will cooperate in any way that the justice system may require.”

Mir is actually under contract with Sevilla FC, but was loaned to Valencia for one season. He took part in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo with the Spanish selection. Spain reached the final but had to settle for the silver medal after a 2-1 loss to Brazil after extra time. Mir scored three goals in six matches.
