ALOR GAJAH, SEPT 4 – A total of 70 motorcyclists among students in six secondary schools in Melaka, were found not to have a driving license during inspections conducted in conjunction with the Road Safety Advocacy Program from July to today.

Malacca Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Muhammad Firdaus Shariff said that 22 students were underage motorcycle riders, as a result of inspections carried out on 371 vehicles throughout the program.

In addition, he said a total of 67 motorcycles that were inspected did not display ‘L’ or ‘P’ stickers, expired motor vehicle licenses and insurance (37 motorcycles) and did not wear helmets (14 people).

“Based on statistics obtained from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Melaka Contingent Police Headquarters, this year alone there were 14 accidents including four fatal accidents involving school students.

“Thus, the Road Accident Advocacy Program involving school students is organized to foster a culture of obeying road rules at a young age, thus reducing the rate of accidents and deaths involving that group through early education and awareness,” he told reporters today.

He said this after the Road Accident Advocacy Program and Motorcycle Inspection at Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Vocational College involving the inspection of 126 motorcycles.

Muhammad Firdaus said that the program was targeted to be implemented in 15 secondary schools around Melaka and so far it has been successfully implemented in six schools including Kolej Kakasional Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Isnin, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tun Syed Zahiruddin, SMK Telok Mas, SMK Hang Kasturi and SMK St David.

He said based on the feedback from the school, the program had a positive effect on the students involved, thus fostering their awareness when on the road. – Named
