Sounds of silence and the colourful exploration of the boundaries of the barely audible have always been Kaija Saariaho’s trademarks. The Finnish composer demonstrated her sound imagination in her home project “Korvat auki” (Open your ears) in the 1970s, then refined and individualised it at the Paris IRCAM under the influence of electronic music and the “Spectralists” around Tristan Murail.
