After a motorboat exploded on the Werlsee near Grünheide (Oder-Spree) and left four people injured, the criminal police are investigating the cause of the fire. They are also checking whether a technical defect caused the explosion, said a police spokesman.

The boat caught fire on Wednesday afternoon. There were four people on board at the time. An 87-year-old man was seriously injured. A 76-year-old woman, an 84-year-old man and another man, whose age was not initially known, suffered minor injuries.

The injured were taken to hospital, one of them by rescue helicopter. According to police, the burning boat drifted back to the shore, where the flames spread to a houseboat. The fire brigade is extinguishing the fire. The material damage could not initially be quantified.
