French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Michel Barnier as Prime Minister. The appointment was made more than 50 days after the extraordinary parliamentary elections, during which the government was functioning temporarily.

73-year-old Barnier was the former envoy of the European Union with Britain during Brexit.

The new prime minister faces a difficult task, particularly with the divided parliament, “France Presse” notes.
