Five days after parting ways with Roger Schmidt, Portuguese record champions Benfica have found a successor. As the Lisbon club announced, the team will once again be coached by Bruno Lage. The 48-year-old was already employed at Benfica from 2018 to 2020 and won the championship and the cup in 2019.

Last Friday, 57-year-old Schmidt’s previous team only managed a 1-1 draw with Moreirense, and Benfica parted ways with him a day later. The traditional club only managed seven points from their first four league games.
Schmidt had been coach of the capital club since July 2022 and had a contract until June 30, 2026. In Schmidt’s first year, Benfica had won its first championship since 2019 – the one under Lage – with some inspiring football.
