JAKARTA, 5 SEPT – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized the important role of Indonesia’s mangrove forests in absorbing carbon, stating that the country’s 3.3 million hectares of mangroves are 12 times more effective in absorbing carbon than tropical rainforests.
This highlights Indonesia’s important contribution to global climate change mitigation efforts, the news agency reported BETWEEN.
The President delivered the matter while emphasizing Indonesia’s potential to address global climate change issues at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 at the Jakarta Convention Center, today.
“Indonesian mangrove forests are the largest in the world, covering 3.3 million hectares and capable of absorbing carbon eight to 12 times better than tropical rainforests,” he said.
He also stated that some parties are not aware of the potential of Indonesia’s mangroves to respond to the effects of climate change.
The President called on the world not to doubt Indonesia’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) and contribute to the world even further.
Furthermore, he underlined that Indonesia also has great potential in green energy, reaching over 3,600 gigawatts.
“We also have a solar power plant. The floating solar power plant in the Cirata Reservoir, with a peak capacity of 192 megawatts, is the largest in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world,” he said.
Accordingly, he emphasized that all the potential that Indonesia has can be utilized optimally if it is strengthened with research as well as investment or funding from developed countries. – Named
