After “Yagi” raged in the Philippines and claimed several lives, the typhoon is about to arrive in China. According to the state news agency Xinhua, “Yagi” has developed into a super typhoon over the South China Sea with wind speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour. It will therefore probably be the most severe storm in the region in ten years.
Yagi was expected to make landfall on the Chinese tropical island of Hainan and the neighboring mainland province of Guangdong around Friday afternoon or evening (local time). The Chinese central government sent task forces to the region to lead flood and typhoon prevention work.
Great concern in Vietnam
“Yagi” had previously passed the southern Chinese coast at a greater distance to the west. In the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong, there was heavy rain overnight into Friday, but no major damage was reported. Flights were cancelled and most schools remained closed on Friday.
In Vietnam, where the typhoon is expected on Saturday, the alarm has been in place for days. Numerous soldiers and helpers have been deployed to respond quickly to the storm and its consequences. Four airports, including in the capital Hanoi, will be closed on Saturday as a precautionary measure.

The operators of boat tours for tourists suspended them for the weekend as a precautionary measure. The German Embassy warned of “life-threatening storm surges”, flooding and landslides.
