According to a report in the “WAZ”, Bundesliga football club VfL Bochum has had a fine for throwing a beer mug partially reimbursed by the offender. The German Football Association fined VfL 100,000 euros in 2022 after a spectator threw a full beer mug that hit assistant referee Christian Gittelmann on the head. The match against Borussia Mönchengladbach was then abandoned in the second half with the score at 0-2.

Substantial part compensated by the perpetrator

The club has asserted its claim for damages, the report said. “An amicable agreement was reached that is in line with both parties’ interests,” VfL spokesman Jens Fricke told WAZ. The Bochum team was allowed to use a third of the DFB fine for security or violence prevention measures. “The perpetrator paid a substantial portion of the remaining 67,000 euros,” Fricke said.

The Bochum District Court had imposed a fine of 3,200 euros (80 daily rates of 40 euros) on the man. He also had to pay the assistant referee 800 euros. The perpetrator withdrew his appeal against the verdict last November, it was further stated.
