ISTANBUL, SEPT 6 – The summer of 2024 has set a new temperature benchmark worldwide, Anadolu agency reported, citing data released on Thursday by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

According to the European Union climate monitor, the global average temperature for the period from June to August reached 0.69 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average, surpassing the previous record of 0.66 degrees Celsius recorded in 2023.

Europe experienced its hottest summer on record, with temperatures rising to 1.54 degrees Celsius above average, surpassing the previous record of 1.34 degrees Celsius set for 2022.

According to C3S, August 2024 equaled August 2023 as the warmest August worldwide with an average surface air temperature of 16.82 degrees Celsius, 0.71 degrees Celsius above average. It marks the 13th month in 14 months in which the average global surface air temperature exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

According to the report, the 12-month period from September 2023 to August 2024 was also the hottest on record, at 0.76 degrees Celsius above average and 1.64 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Copernicus said the global average temperature anomaly year to date (January to August 2024) is 0.70 degrees Celsius above average, making it increasingly likely that 2024 will be the hottest year on record.

“The temperature-related extreme events witnessed this summer will only become more intense, with more devastating consequences for people and the planet, unless we take immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess. – Named
