Record world champions Brazil defeated the Ecuadorian national team 1-0 in the World Cup qualifiers. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo scored in the 30th minute for the hosts at the Couto Pereira Stadium in Curitiba, ending a series of three consecutive defeats.

Brazil is currently in fourth place in the table after a disappointing qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The first six teams qualify directly for the finals, the seventh-placed team has to go into the relegation round. The “Seleção” will face Paraguay next Tuesday, while Ecuador will play Peru on the same day.

On matchday seven, Argentinian Sebastián Becaccece made his debut as Ecuador’s new national coach, having taken over the “Tri” from Spaniard Félix Sánchez Bas following their elimination from the Copa América in the quarter-finals.
