SAN FRANCISCO, SEPT 9 – Apple is expected to release its latest iPhone today that will feature generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities as the tech giant seeks to boost sales of its iconic device.

The company founded by Steve Jobs had planned to give some exposure during its themed launch event Glowtimeat its headquarters in the city of Cupertino in Silicon Valley.

It is common for Apple to usually update its iPhones around this time.

Apple has made a lot of use of the iPhone 16 and hopes that customers will be drawn to buy the latest AI-powered model.

With sales of US$39 billion last quarter, the iPhone accounts for about 60 percent of Apple’s revenue, and remains a key entry point to the company’s services, such as the App Store or Apple TV, which are increasingly becoming part of its business.

Apple has just recovered from a prolonged sales slump due to consumers sticking with older models for a long time.

“The iPhone 16 will be one of the most important iPhone offerings, not because of its external form but the system found in it, which is Apple Intelligence,” said Forrester’s principal analyst, Dipanjan Chatterjee.

Apple Intelligence is a new software program for all devices announced last June at the company’s annual developer conference, where it also announced a partnership with OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT.

In the short term, it includes AI-generated image editing, translation and creative touches in messaging and an upgraded Siri digital assistant. – AFP
