Ideas for the development of Breite Straße in Berlin-Mitte can be seen at an exhibition in the Neues Stadthaus. All entries in the competition, which were announced by the city development administration and the state-owned Berlin-Mitte housing association, will be on display there until September 22nd. Visiting the exhibition in Parochialstraße is free of charge, as the Senate administration announced.

In July, the jury of the competition for the planning of a new building ensemble with residential and commercial buildings not far from the Schlossplatz awarded a first, second and third prize to one work each for each of the five sub-plots.

Excavation finds should be preserved

The aim of the competition was to develop five individual houses that would simultaneously be part of a mixed-use district – one of the requirements was also to create rent-controlled housing.

An important part of the task was to preserve archaeological finds made during excavations on Breite Straße as part of a future archaeological trail and to incorporate them into future use.

The ground floor of the buildings will have space for restaurants and retail outlets. According to the city development administration, rental apartments for a broad range of population groups and commercial units are planned for the upper floors.
