A French shark horror film narrowly lost out to a Norwegian monster film: The Olympic shocker “Under the Waters of the Seine” narrowly missed out on first place in the list of the most successful non-English language Netflix films. “Under the Waters of the Seine” aka “Under Paris” (original title: Sous la Seine) registered 102.3 million views in around three months, as Netflix announced.

The Norwegian fantasy film “Troll” by director Roar Uthaug had 103 million views in the first three months after its release (December 1, 2022). It remains at the top of the top 10 “Most Popular Films (Non-English)”. So-called views are the hours watched divided by the total running time – which in this case is (probably coincidentally) 104 minutes for both films.

“In the Waters of the Seine” by director Xavier Gens, with film stars such as Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes, was the Netflix hit of the summer and topped the Netflix charts for non-English language films in many countries for weeks. The horror film was a fitting time for the Olympic Games in the French capital. In the bloody shocker, a very dangerous shark is located in the Seine in the middle of Paris before a triathlon competition.

The film was released on June 5th and is still available to watch. However, Netflix (which claims to currently have 278 million paying members in more than 190 countries) does not disclose viewing figures longer than those of the first 91 days.

The streaming service maintains four top 10 lists for different categories (for “film” – English-language and non-English-language, and for “TV” – meaning series – English-language and non-English-language).
