Glenn Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, plans to step down in September 2025 after 30 years at the helm of the world-famous art house. The museum confirmed a corresponding announcement in the New York Times. “It is the right moment to think about the future of the museum, and I just thought: Carpe Diem,” Lowry told the newspaper.
The MoMA board confirmed that an international consulting firm would be hired to find a successor. Lowry, who was appointed the museum’s sixth director in 1995, shaped MoMA through two major renovations that more than doubled the size of its exhibition spaces.
He also multiplied the museum’s endowment and created a research and education center. Under his leadership, MoMA developed a new model for presenting modern and contemporary art. This was also reflected in visitor numbers: during Lowry’s tenure, the number of visitors grew to almost three million people per year.
