MEDINA, Ohio – City officials are hopeful that the purchase of two portable traffic signals will improve the safety of police officers and city workers during traffic emergencies and roadwork around Medina.

Council unanimously approved the purchase of two portable trailer mounted traffic signals from A &A Safety, Inc.

Service Director Nino Piccoli said that earlier this year, the city applied for a grant from the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation to help pay for these traffic signals and were successful in securing $40,000 in grant money. He said the traffic signals would have originally cost $100,000 for the two of them, but the price had decreased to $63,000 leaving the city’s share of the cost to be approximately $23,000.

Piccoli said the portable traffic signals can be used to help direct traffic during emergency situations, such as a water leak.

He said that during such events, there is typically a police officer on scene directing traffic while workers are correcting the issue.

But he said the traffic signal would be a safer option, keeping a police officer or city worker out of the street and away from the risk of being hit by a car.

Also during the meeting council approved legislation to award The Ruhlin Company the bid to act as constructor of renovation of the 1969 Courthouse.

Council also approved the purchase of a 2024 Ford F150 pickup truck for the city’s sanitation department.
