Before the expected drop in temperature and snowfall in the Alps Experts advise against challenging hikes in Austria’s mountains. “With the current weather forecast, you have no business being in the high mountains next weekend,” says Gerhard Mössmer, mountain sports expert at the Austrian Alpine Association (ÖAV).

Austria’s state weather service Geosphere Austria issued a rain, snow and wind warning from Thursday until the beginning of next week. Meteorologists expect 100 to 150 centimetres of fresh snow in high mountain areas. But it can also snow briefly below 1000 metres above sea levelit was said. According to the Alpine Association, such cold weather conditions in September are not unusual.

Even small amounts of snow could make markings and the associated hiking trails difficult to recognize, warns Mössmer. In addition, ice could quickly turn easy routes into difficult passages, he explains.

“If you still want to get out on the weekend, we recommend hiking near the valley not far above the tree line,” says the mountain sports expert. The Alpine Association advises careful tour planning and weatherproof clothing. (dpa)
