LONDON, SEPT 12 – Cristiano Ronaldo, who claimed that Erik ten Hag’s attitude was too negative, urged the United manager to keep aiming for the English Premier League title even though the club had to be rebuilt from the ground up.

The Portugal star, who currently plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, has had a strained relationship with the Ten Hag before his second spell at Old Trafford ends at the end of 2022.

However, Ronaldo believes his former club need to make big changes but the Ten Hag should not rule out the possibility of winning a major trophy during that period.

The Dutchman said he was confident of winning more titles this season after lifting the League Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

But last July he said his team was still not ready to win the English Premier League, which had not been won since the last season under Alex Ferguson in 2013.

“Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion,” Ronaldo said in an episode of the podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, which will be released today.

Coaches, they say they are not able to compete to win the league and the Champions League. As Manchester United coach, you can’t say that. You must fight to win the league or the Champions League.

“You may not have that potential, but you can’t say that. You have to try. You must try”.

United stunned Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but suffered their worst Premier League season last year, when they finished eighth. The club, who have won 20 Premier League titles, have also lost two of their opening three games this season. – AFP
