The headgear did not suit him particularly well: During a visit to the US state of Pennsylvania, outgoing US President Joe Biden put on a red cap with the inscription “Trump 2024”. Biden has on the anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 as a gesture of “unity” done, the White House announced on Wednesday (local time). Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had called on Biden to put on the cap.
The cap is one of the accessories of the election campaign of former President Trump, who wants to move back into the White House and whom Biden sees as a threat to US democracy.
The incident occurred at a meeting on Wednesday with firefighters in Shanksville, Pennsylvania in memory of the terrorist attacks of September 11. The plane carrying Flight 93 crashed there after its passengers rebelled against the hijackers. The Islamists probably wanted to fly the plane to a target in Washington.
Democrat Biden spoke in Shanksville about the “cross-party unity” to which the country must return, wrote Andrew Bates, spokesman for the White House, in the online service X. The president gave a Trump supporter a cap with the presidential seal. In exchange, the supporter gave Biden his “Trump 2024” cap, which he had “worn briefly.” The 81-year-old put the red cap on top of a black one that he was already wearing.
The video of the laughing president with the cap of his political arch-rival perched on his head quickly spread on online services. The Trump team reacted immediately and used the episode for their own benefit: “Thanks for the support, Joe!” the team wrote on the online service X.
The president dropped out of the race for the White House on July 21 because doubts about his mental and physical fitness had become increasingly loud. The trigger for the end of his political career was a disastrous performance in the TV duel with Trump a month earlier.
Biden’s Vice President Kamala Harris, who is running for the Democrats in November’s presidential election instead of him, had previously attended the 9/11 memorial in New York on Wednesday together with Biden and Trump and was there for just a few hours after the aggressive TV debate with the Republican shook his hand.
