The German champions SC Magdeburg started the new season of the Champions League with a defeat. The Elbe city team lost to the Hungarian representative Pick Szeged 29:31 (18:17). Philipp Weber and Omar Ingi Magnusson were the best Magdeburg scorers with five goals each.

In Hungary, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team met three former SCM players: Janus Smarason, Tobias Thulin and Gleb Kalarash. The attacking lines dominated the opening phase and the SCM took an early two-goal lead (8th minute). However, Magdeburg then missed too many shots and the hosts turned the game around. “Stay stable, we’re doing well,” said Wiegert, nevertheless satisfied, during a timeout (19th minute). At halftime, the Elbe city team were just ahead.

After the break, Szeged had the better finishing rate and, above all, the better goalkeeper: Magdeburg was thwarted too often by goalkeeper Roland Mikler (16 saves). After more than five minutes without a goal from SCM, Wiegert called the second timeout (40th minute), but it had no effect: Szeged scored two more goals, took a six-goal lead and practically decided the match. It was only in the last ten minutes that SCM managed to improve the score.
