LOS ANGELES, SEPT 12 – Spanish golfer Jon Rahm intends to participate in three European golf tournaments before the end of the year to maintain his Ryder Cup eligibility, but he insists he will not pay the fine imposed by the DP World Tour over his participation in the LIV golf league.
The two-time major champion joined LIV Golf last December and now faces a deadline to pay fines imposed by the DP World Tour on players who failed to obtain permission to compete in the Saudi-funded league, which clashed with official tour events. .
As Rahm prepares for the LIV Golf tournament in Chicago this week, he is hoping to participate in two events in his home country – the Spanish Open and the Andalucia Masters and the Dunhill Links Championship. However, he admitted that he was still unsure whether he would be allowed to perform.
“We registered a long time ago,” said Rahm.
“Whether they allow me to play or not, that’s another matter. I don’t agree with the fine and I think I’ve been quite vocal about it.
“I do not intend to pay the fine and we continue to try to talk to them about how this matter can be resolved,” he added.
“I’ve said many times, I’m not playing in the Spanish Open to get fame or anything.
“I think it’s my responsibility to Spanish golf to be there and I also want to play in Sotogrande.”
There’s a chance Rahm could play if he appeals the ban.
LIV Golf’s Tyrrell Hatton previously entered the British Masters after appealing, with penalties settled later.
