Against the former Hollywood producer convicted of sexual violence Harvey Weinstein New charges have been brought. The new charges against the imprisoned 72-year-old were filed by the public prosecutor at a court hearing in New York, as the newspapers “New York Post” and “New York Times” reported on Thursday. They were initially kept under seal.
Weinstein was absent from the hearing, and the indictment is to be read on September 18, if his health permits. The former film mogul was released from Rikers Island on Monday admitted to a New York hospital where emergency heart surgery was performed. His spokesman said a day later that Weinstein was out of danger and resting.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 for sexual assault and rape. However, the New York State Supreme Court overturned the verdict in the spring due to procedural errors and ordered a retrial. Weinstein remained in custody, however, as he was also sentenced to 16 years in prison for allegations of sexual violence in another case in Los Angeles in February 2023.
The new trial against Weinstein in New York is scheduled to begin on November 12. More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of harassment, sexual assault or rape. Among them are prominent actresses such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd. Weinstein still claims that the sexual relations were consensual. (AFP)
