BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, SEPT 12 – A 43-year-old Indian woman, Vijaya Bollu, yesterday faced charges under the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 68, for causing an accident that led to death at a road intersection last year.

The charges brought by Prosecuting Officer Nazurah Amani Abidin stem from an incident on the night of October 14, 2023, between 9 and 9:40 p.m., when Bollu, who was driving his vehicle, allegedly failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Highway. It then resulted in a collision with another vehicle moving from left to right with a green light in favor of that vehicle.

The accident tragically resulted in the death of the 62-year-old victim, who was a front passenger in another vehicle. Bollu was charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public, causing death.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and up to seven years in prison. In addition, under Section 27 (3) of the Road Traffic Act, if convicted will lead to the suspension or not being allowed to have or obtain a driving license for life, unless the court decides otherwise for certain reasons.

Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni adjourned the case to October 24, to set a trial date.
