The drop in temperature since the beginning of September has led to record low temperatures for this time of year in Switzerland. At some measuring stations, the lowest daily maximum for the first half of September since measurements began was recorded on Friday, MeteoSwiss reported on the news service X.

According to MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, the temperature measurements go back decades – in some places even to 1864. The records were measured in Glarus at 7.8 degrees, in Engelberg at 4.6 degrees and in Interlaken at 8.1 degrees. On the Jungfraujoch, which is over 4,100 meters high, minus 11.7 degrees were measured, also a record for the first half of September.
In some places it snowed below 1,000 meters, for example in Appenzell and the Rhine Valley. At 1,300 meters up to ten centimeters fell, and above 1,800 meters up to 35 centimeters fell, such as in Arosa in Graubünden.
Several Alpine passes were closed, including the Klausen, Furka, Gotthard, Grimsel, Flüela, Susten and Nufenen passes. In some places, drivers who were only using summer tires were stranded. They had to wait in hotels for better weather.
