Lorena Wiebes has continued the Dutch dominance in the women’s road race at the European Cycling Championships. As expected, the 25-year-old top sprinter won the mass sprint on the 162-kilometer circuit from Heusden-Zolder to Hasselt ahead of Italian Elisa Balsamo and Polish Daria Pikulik. It was the eighth Oranje victory at the ninth European Championships and the second title win for Wiebes after 2022.

The German team played no role in the decision. The best German was national champion Franziska Koch in 13th place.

The German team has won five medals at the European Championships so far. The highlight is the men’s road race on Sunday. The German team includes the two classic specialists Nils Politt and John Degenkolb. Superstars such as Tour winner Tadej Pogacar and the Dane Jonas Vingegaard have decided not to take part in the European Championships.
