Following a report on alleged abuses at the Berlin Charité, the hospital’s management will speak to the House of Representatives’ Science Committee next Monday (23 September) about the investigation into the allegations. A spokesperson for the Charité confirmed this. Health Senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) had already announced this in the Health Committee. It is the Charité’s job to investigate the allegations and examine what structural changes might be required. “The Charité management is working very hard to clarify these allegations,” she stressed.
A team of reporters from “Stern” and RTL said they had researched for months and had spoken to dozens of patients, relatives, doctors, managers and experts and had access to internal documents. In addition, reporters had worked undercover for several weeks between March and August on three wards of the Charité as nursing interns. “If you put the results of the research together like pieces of a large puzzle, they paint a picture of a proud but sick hospital,” says “Stern”.
Charité contradicts – Senator refers to services
The Charité stated in a statement that the generalized accusations were unjustified in essential respects. The reporting withheld important information and painted a picture that did not correspond to reality.
Senator Czyborra referred to the hospital’s services. “We have a quality control system in our health care system that documents and evaluates the success and quality of treatments. You don’t become the sixth best hospital in the world if you don’t meet these quality requirements.” And she emphasized: “Patients can be very sure that they will receive the best possible care at the highest level at the Charité.” Of course, one has to look at what might have happened in individual cases.
