CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – Geauga County residents are invited to attend the annual meeting of Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Veterans Legacy Woods Tribute Lodge when the organization celebrates its 80th year. Despite being an octogenarian, a full slate of activities are planned, including dinner, conservation awards presentation, raffles and a presentation on how the district’s annual tree sale continues to branch out. You can learn about a partnership with Holden Arboretum’s People 4 Trees initiative and how this year’s tree sale grew into a the new Planting the seed to Read educational program.

YMCA expands youth basketball: Do you have a child who has game? The Geauga YMCA is seeking to grow its youth basketball program, Jr. Cavs, to have more teams and involve more kids. Open to kids in three age categories, the program is seeking players for four teams in the three-four year old group, and in the nine to 12 year old group, as well as six teams in the two categories from five to six and seven to eight. Voting for judges: Do you feel confident in making the best choice at the ballot box when it comes to judges? Join attorneys Deborah Coleman and Barbara Greenberg 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 for their discussion on Judging the Judges at Park Synagogue. The program is non-partisan. Topics include the role of judges, the qualifications for judicial candidates and how everyone can become a more informed voter in selecting a judge. Quilt show: On view this month at the Chagrin Falls Branch library are stunning quilts created by members of the Chagrin Valley Quilt Guild. See them in the library’s meeting room. Shhh, but don’t get too cozy.
Solon Book Sale: The Friends of the Solon Library are holding a book sale Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday. On Friday teachers with an ID can receive 20 percent off. Browse through a selection of books for all ages, DVDs, audio books and more items. The proceeds support the group’s initiatives and programs.
Dungeons & Dragons: Teens in grades seven through 12 are invited to learn the basics of playing this popular game 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. After instruction they can play a quick game. The program will be held in the meeting room on the main floor of Chagrin Falls Branch library.
At Wit’s End: Chagrin Valley Little Theatre opens is 95th season 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 with the one-woman show Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End based on the musings of syndicated columnist from Dayton who wrote about her everyday trials of suburban motherhood and marriage. Directed by Mark Seven and staring Paula Kline-Messner, the one-woman show will be on stage 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 28 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 and 29.
The comedy was written by identical twins Allison and Margaret Engel who grew up in Chagrin Falls and read Bombeck’s column. They were approached by Bombeck’s agent to write the play after they had written one about journalist and humorist Molly Ivins. Actress Kline-Messner appeared in numerous productions in Ohio and national tours, including tours of Menopause, The Musical. She is a former television host and producer of several nationally syndicated programs and a four-time Emmy Award Winner for her work as a television writer, producer and on camera talent.
On opening night the theatre will host a $25 VIP reception with wine and hors d’œuvres beginning at 6 p.m. After the premiere performance, all audience members are invited to stay for a talkback session with the show’s playwrights.
