The national basketball players Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally have secured the best possible starting position for the WNBA playoffs with the New York Liberty. After the 87:71 win against the Washington Mystics, the team can no longer be pushed out of first place in the table and definitely has home advantage in the most important games of the season. It is not yet clear who the Liberty will face in the playoffs, which begin on September 22nd. The team wants to win the title this season, and Fiebich and Sabally would be the first Germans to do so in the WNBA.
Last season, the Liberty lost the final series against the Las Vegas Aces with Sabally as a substitute. Sabally now plays a much bigger role in the team; this is Fiebich’s first season in the USA. She is one of the most important players in the squad. “We have won 22 games and we don’t win these games without her influence,” said Australian coach Sandy Brondello, describing a possible award as “Sixth Player of the Year”, as the most valuable substitute, as an obvious choice for Fiebich.
Sabally and Fiebich score double digits
Both Germans had strong games against Washington. Fiebich scored 13 points, only star Breanna Stewart scored more for the Liberty. Fiebich also contributed two steals, two rebounds and two assists. “She’s not a newbie for me, she’s been playing as a pro in Europe for so long,” said Sabally. “It’s cool to see that she was able to take on such a big role for us so quickly.”

Sabally had 12 points, four rebounds and one block. “It’s fun to watch them, they obviously have good chemistry,” Brondello said of her two German players. “They’re young, but they know how to play and how to play properly.”
