MADRID, SEPT 18 – A 12-year-old male student attacked and injured several of his friends with a knife at a school in Portugal, the German News Agency (dpa) reported citing newspapers Público.
A 12-year-old female student was taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries but is reported to be in a stable condition, according to the newspaper Público citing authorities yesterday.
The incident happened in Azambuja, about 50 kilometers northeast of Lisbon and the cause of the attack is still under investigation.
The male student is said to have returned to the school after lunch and attacked several children randomly with a knife, according to a statement by the mayor of Azambuja, Silvino Lúcio. He was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest.
The victims, consisting of five female students and one male student, suffered injuries, mainly in the arms and legs.
According to reports, the victim and attacker are now receiving treatment from a psychologist. The male student was detained by the police for questioning.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro condemned the incident.
