Bundesliga: Union Berlin’s new signing Skov: “Hunger is there”

Midfielder Robert Skov is looking forward to his first season with Union Berlin with optimism. “I’m hungry. I want to develop and take the next step,” said the 28-year-old new signing of the Bundesliga club in a media round. “The first time here was great. I felt good from the start, in the dressing room and with the team.”

Settling in was relatively straightforward for the Dane, as he has already gotten to know Germany over the last five years through his time at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and speaks the language. One of his compatriots at Union, Frederik Rönnow, would help him with small things. “We talked before I signed and he still helps me sometimes now,” reported Skov. “But the other guys are just as friendly.”

Late transfer decision

The fact that the move to the Spree was only completed in September also presented the versatile left-footer with new mental challenges. “I was open to everything and waited for a good opportunity – longer than I thought. That was sometimes difficult because I was suddenly alone and wasn’t used to it,” said Skov.

He explained that negotiations with Union only began after the transfer deadline on August 30. “But in the end it was worth it. I was looking for something where I could contribute something on the pitch, feel comfortable and enjoy playing football. That is the case now.”

He is relaxed about the fact that the 14-time Danish international could now make his debut in Berlin against his old club on Saturday (3.30 p.m./Sky). “I was without a club for a long time and trained hard so that I could help the team. Now things are slowly moving forward and when the coach brings me on, I’m there,” said Skov, warning: “This is a top opponent. Everyone knows Hoffenheim and knows what quality they have. They don’t play in Europe for nothing.”
