10 more modular homes coming to Cleveland through Habitat for Humanity

CLEVELAND, Ohio — More modular homes are on the way as Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity continues its efforts to address affordable housing shortage.

Two weeks after previewing four modular homes in the Detroit Shoreway area, Habitat for Humanity will begin working on 10 homes on East 164th Street and Grovewood Avenue in the city’s Collinwood neighborhood, a news release said.

Modular homes are built at an off-site facility and then transported in pieces to the construction site. They are then put together on a foundation.

In this case, the homes were built by Champion Homes at its Sugarcreek facility. Each will be 1,350 square feet and have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and basements. The release added that aging-in-place was kept in mind when designing the homes.

The features and design match the homes Habitat for Humanity debuted on West 83rd Street near Madison Avenue earlier this month.

Habitat for Humanity said it received $5 million in American Rescue Protection Act funds from City Council toward the project with each of the planned 19 modular homes receiving $90,000.

“For years, I have lobbied for the construction of new single-family modular homes in the city of Cleveland,” Ward 8 Councilman Michael Polensek said in a statement.

John Litten, president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Habitat, said this was part of the organization’s 400 Home Initiative, a $33 million plan to build, restore and repair homes throughout Cuyahoga and Lorain counties.

To be eligible for Habitat for Humanity’s mortgage program, people have to make 30%-80% of the area’s median income and have the ability to pay a zero-interest mortgage.

Litten said the only down payment required is service.
