Nigerian Victor Olatunji caused a stir with an unusual message during his goal celebration in Sparta Prague’s Champions League victory over RB Salzburg. “I am a chosen one. Who are you?” was written on the striker’s shirt, which he wore under his jersey on Wednesday evening and presented shortly before half-time.
The 25-year-old scored the 2-0 goal in the 42nd minute of the 3-0 (2-0) win. His celebration consisted of several parts: First, Olatunji held his hand to his ear, then he jumped in celebration, as is world famous in Cristiano Ronaldo’s football. Finally, he showed the cameras his shirt message.
Connection to a free church?
The Nigerian newspaper “Guardian” saw in the gesture a reference to one of the evangelical free churches that are becoming increasingly popular in Africa’s most populous country. A revival church called “The Lord’s Chosen” with its own radio station and online services was founded in 2002.
The alleged miracles posted on their website through prayers and the Holy Spirit include overcoming illnesses, professional successes or one of the coveted work visas for Europe. The so-called testimonies of church members often contain the phrase “I am one of the chosen ones.”
