NHL star Seider signs million dollar contract in Detroit

Germany’s ice hockey star Moritz Seider has signed a long-term, million-dollar contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The 23-year-old defender is committed to the NHL team from the US state of Michigan until 2031 and, according to the Red Wings, will earn 8.55 million US dollars (around 7.6 million euros) per year. In total, the former Mannheim player will collect almost 60 million dollars (around 53.6 million euros) in seven years.

This means that Seider, who played a major role in the runner-up finish at the 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship, signed a contract with a similar amount of money after his three-year entry-level contract to that of superstar Leon Draisaitl at the time with the Edmonton Oilers. The world-class striker received around $8.5 million after his first extension. In September, Draisaitl extended his contract until 2032 and will receive around $14 million per year.

Seider quickly reaches top NHL level

Seider, who was from Mannheim at the time, was surprisingly selected sixth by the Red Wings in the 2019 draft. After two years with the Grand Rapids Griffins farm team and in Sweden with Rögle BK, Seider has been one of the best NHL defenders since 2021. Last season he scored nine goals and assisted on 33 goals.

At the Red Wings, he is one of the top earners alongside Swede Lucas Raymond, captain Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat, and is expected to lead the eleven-time Stanley Cup champions back into the playoffs after 2016. Last season, Seider and his team narrowly failed.
