In October, Berlin will be brightly lit again: From 4 to 13 October, the capital will host the Festival of Lights Over the course of ten nights, almost 50 Berlin landmarks will shine in bright colors.
“For the 20th time in a row, we are transforming our capital into a shining World stage for great light art. Historical monuments, famous buildings and popular places will become shining stars for ten nights,” said Birgit Zander, organizer and director of the Festival of Lights. 20 international artists will be taking part this year.

Her light and video art will then daily from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. among others on the Brandenburg Gatedem Berlin Cathedralthe State Opera Unter den Linden and the Charlottenburg Palace to see. But also the Town Hall Park Lichtenberg and the Chamber of Crafts at Hallesches Tor in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg are covered in bright colours. For the first time, the S-Bahn line “Siemens Railway” between Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Spandau.

The motto of the Festival of Lights this year: “Celebrating Freedom”. And there is a reason for this: “35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, we want celebrate freedomBecause what is more important and beautiful than freedom, which gives us so many opportunities to shape our lives according to our ideas,” says festival director Zander. Many artists then show their interpretation of freedom on numerous landmarks in the city.
The motto reminds us how precious freedom is and that it must be defended, fought for and lived every day, said Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) in advance. He is the patron of the light art festival. “Join me in looking forward to an unforgettable Festival of Lights 2024, which celebrates the freedom that unites us and makes it shine in a special way,” says Wegner.
Festival of Lights 2024: Concert with Paul van Dyk in Berlin Cathedral
For the 20th anniversary there is a special feature this year: Techno DJ Paul van Dyk will be on 8 and 9 October in the Berlin Cathedral Concerts play. “The audience can look forward to an impressive light and video installation in the chancel of the imposing Berlin Cathedral, which perfectly sets the scene for the musical journey,” say the organizers.
