The first winner of the new FIFA Intercontinental Cup will be determined shortly before Christmas in Qatar. On December 18th – exactly two years after the World Cup final – Champions League winners Real Madrid will fight for the trophy in the final in Doha.
The opponent will be determined in four matches between the continental champions from Asia, Oceania, Africa, North and South America. The first of these knockout duels will take place this Sunday, as the world association FIFA announced following a decision by its Council Committee.
In recent years there has been a Club World Cup between the continental champions; the Champions League winner always had to play in the semi-finals. The new Club World Cup will take place next summer in the USA as a larger tournament with 32 teams.
