Cambodia raises the monthly minimum wage for the garment industry

PHNOM PENH, SEPT 20 – Cambodia yesterday set the new monthly minimum wage for the country’s clothing, footwear and travel equipment industry at US$208 for 2025, up 1.96 percent from the current rate of US$204, said Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, Heng Sour.

The statement came after the National Council for Minimum Wage voted for a monthly minimum wage of US$206 for next year, which was later increased by US$2 by Prime Minister Hun Manet.

“This new minimum wage for clothing, footwear and travel equipment factory workers will take effect from January 1, 2025 onwards,” said Heng Sour.

In addition to the monthly minimum wage, workers will also receive other monthly fringe benefits, including an additional US$10 per month for regular attendance and an additional US$7 per month for transportation and rent, he added.

The clothing, footwear and travel equipment sector, which is the country’s biggest contributor to foreign exchange earnings, makes up about 1,538 factories and branches with about 913,000 employees, according to the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training.

The Southeast Asian country exported products worth US$6.24 billion in the period from January to June 2024, up 16.4 percent from US$5.36 billion in the same period last year, according to the Customs and Excise Department. – Xinhua
