CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cuyahoga River and Rivergate Park were very busy Saturday with rowers competing in the 28th Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta.

The Cleveland Rowing Foundation hosted the nation’s largest single-day rowing event, while welcoming clubs from 14 states, as well as an international crew from Mexico.

Rowers launched from the Cleveland Rowing Foundation and Merwin’s Wharf docks, rowing 5,000 meters upriver to the starting line near the steel mills, and then turn around for the race back. The races were conducted in a time-trial format, with crews setting off one at a time and racing against the clock.

“It’s so exciting to welcome 61 rowing clubs and 2,000 rowers to this year’s Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta,” said Sue Tyler, President of the Cleveland Rowing Foundation.

“The combination of challenging turns and stunning views of Cleveland made it a unique experience, both for competitors and spectators,” Tyler added. “It was also a great opportunity to showcase our city and river and boost our economy by an estimated $1.3 million in direct spending.”

Rowers of all ages and experience levels took part in the event, with competitors ranging in age from 13-years old to 80-plus.
