OVI suspect says he had only 1 drink, refuses sobriety tests: North Olmsted Police Blotter

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio –

OVI: Columbia Road

An officer at 12:12 a.m. on Sept. 2 spotted an eastbound car on Lorain Road that was weaving, and the driver repeatedly changed lanes without signaling.

At one point, the driver came close to striking a vehicle in front of him that had stopped for a red light, according to a police report. The officer stopped the suspect’s Kia on Columbia Road north of Florence Avenue. The driver told the officer he had only one drink at a friend’s house. However, when the driver said he was headed to his North Olmsted home, the officer informed the driver that he was headed in the wrong direction. The driver repeatedly apologized during the traffic stop, according to the police report.

The officer smelled an alcoholic beverage on the driver, according to the report. The driver refused to perform field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample to determine his blood alcohol content, according to the report.

The suspect was charged with OVI, refusing an alcohol test, failing to drive within marked lanes, weaving, and failing to obey a traffic control device.

Shoplifting: Great Northern Shopping Mall

Two officers at 4:44 p.m. on Sept. 2 responded to Dillard’s department store after an off-duty officer who was working store security reported an attempted shoplifting by a female suspect who was in custody.

A store security camera operator watched as the woman concealed jewelry and perfume tester bottles in a shopping bag, according to a police report. The off-duty officer stopped the woman after she left all points of sale in the store and tried to exit into the mall. The officer recovered six items of Dillard’s merchandise with a total value of $495. The woman was charged with petty theft.

Petty theft: Brookpark Road

Home Depot store security called the police department at 2:11 p.m. on Sept. 8 to report a man who had previously been trespassed from the store had just attempted to steal a cartload of flooring materials.

The store employees said the man passed all points of purchase with the shopping cart, made no attempt to pay for the merchandise, and when confronted, he left the items behind, got into a gray Ford Ranger, and began driving away.

Officers stopped the vehicle as it was turning out of the Great Northern Shopping Center parking lot, according to a police report. The driver said he had merely dropped off the passenger at the store and did not go inside. Store security identified the passenger as the suspect inside their store.

The suspect was charged with petty theft and criminal trespassing and once again reminded that he was no longer welcome at any Home Depot location.
