Füchse Berlin suffer first Bundesliga defeat

The Füchse Berlin suffered their first defeat on the third match day of the Handball Bundesliga. The Berliners lost 35:38 (17:21) on Sunday after a weak defensive performance at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf. The best Berlin scorers were Lasse Andersson, Mathias Gidsel and Tim Freihöfer with nine goals each. On Wednesday the Füchse in the Champions League RK Pelister celebrated its first victory after returning to Europe’s best competition.

It was a fast-paced game from the start, with the Foxes making a few technical errors and falling behind straight away. But it remained close. After nine minutes, Andersson put the Foxes in front for the first time (7:6). But the lead was short-lived.

The guests had major problems in defense. “Our problem is defense, guys,” complained coach Jaron Siewert during a timeout. Almost every attack by the hosts resulted in a goal. The Berlin team were particularly unable to stop national players Renars Uscins and Justus Fischer. The deficit grew to four goals at halftime.

After the break, the Füchse made a few technical errors – and the deficit grew to five goals (20:25). The guests fought and got back to within two goals with just under six minutes to go (32:34). But Hannover always had an answer and continued to mercilessly exploit the Füchse’s defensive weakness. (dpa)
