Butter price could reach record level by Christmas

According to the Bavarian Milk Producers Association, butter in German retail stores could be become more expensive than ever before.

The managing director of the Bavarian Milk Producers’ Association, Hans-Jürgen Seufferlein, told the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” (Monday edition) with regard to the current price of 2.09 euros for 250 grams of branded butter in discount stores and supermarkets: “The will certainly not be the end. We will probably see new record prices by the end of the year.”

According to the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, the previous record for butter prices was reached 2.29 euros in autumn 2022. By August 2023 it had fallen to 1.39 euros – and has been rising again since then.

Seufferlein cited a decline in production as the reason for the increase: numerous farms have given up dairy farming. At the same time, demand is currently increasing. (AFP)
