AKRON, Ohio — A man who beat his girlfriend so severely that she was unconscious for nearly a full day has been sentenced to eight to 12 years in prison.
A news release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich says James Dampier, 36, of Akron, was sentenced Tuesday by Judge Jennifer Towell after he was convicted by a jury on July 19 of felonious assault and domestic violence.
According to the news release, the attack occurred on Dec. 24, 2023. The 27-year-old victim called 911 after regaining consciousness and spent several weeks in a hospital intensive care unit. Her injuries included swelling and bruising to her head and burns. She also had a bald patch from where her hair had been pulled out, the release says.
The victim has undergone intensive rehabilitation since the attack.
“This was a violent assault with the victim still recovering from her injuries,” Kolkovich says in a statement. “James Dampier beat the victim and left her for dead. Thankfully she survived and Dampier will spend a significant time in prison.”
