KUALA LUMPUR, SEPT 25 – The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) is ready to face any cyber threats that are expected to occur more frequently next year.

The Chief Officer of NACSA, Dr Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin said it was due to the obligation of entities under the National Critical Information Infrastructure (NCII) to report any cyber threat incident which was gazetted in the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Act 854) effective last August.

“However, we do not see that the number of reported incidents as an indication of whether we have a major threat or not. What is more important is how we control and ensure that any incident that occurs does not have a critical impact on the country and the people,” he said as a guest in the ‘Jendela Fikir: Strengthening Cyber Security’ program published by Named Radio today.

He said this is because the nature of cyber threats is becoming more complex and sophisticated even though the number of incidents is decreasing every year.

In the meantime, Megat Zuhairy said the element of panic has a significant impact on cyber security and any report of an incident involving an agency or entity cannot be denied if proven correct.

“Here, the communication plan is very important. We need to convey the facts of the incident and immediately take action so that a greater impact does not occur,” he said.

He also informed that Malaysians are still not aware of the importance of cyber hygiene practices in online activities.

“For example, when we sometimes receive an SMS or text through a messaging application, it may contain phishing link which exposes us to cyber threats, including the extraction of personal information and smartphone banking. That is why we are trying to strengthen awareness programs in that aspect,” he said. – Named
